This is one of the blackhouses at Garennin. Blackhouses were how the islanders lived before the Clearances and depopulation of the area and shift to more modern housing. This is now a hostel where I stayed, and you can see the ruined rest of the village of Garennin, a sad and spooky reminder of the depopulation of the area and clearances that happened in the 19th and 20th centuries. - Hebrides-0832
Detail of one of the roof of one of the blackhouses, they were called blackhouses as the smoke apparently made the inside black as chimneys weren't that common and the smoke filtered through the thatch. Stayed at Garennin one night of torrential downpour, then walked around the headland for several miles with a large army pack, almost slipping over the cliffs as it still was so wet...I think I now know why I like B&Bs! - Hebrides-0831
